Department of Mathematics, VSPC V. S Patel college of Arts & Sciencewas established in June 1960 at Bilimora. In science wing there were two main Departments wise Chemistry and Mathematics having special subject. Statistics teachers were included in Maths Dept. The Principal of the college was Prin. D. G. Vashi who was Prof. of Statistics. As the head of this Dept. Prof. G. C. Patel was appointed. With him the other teachers were Shri R. K. Mehta (Lect. inStatisitcs), Shri M. N. Patel (Lect. in Mathematics), Shri B. D. Pandya, Sushilaben& C. P. Intwala as Tutor in Maths. Mr. B. C. Khundhawala as Lecturer in Statistics. For four years this Dept. was run under the leadership of G. C. Patel but the Dept was named as Maths Dept. At that time there was no policy of Gujarat Uni. to give affiliation for Dept. of Statistics. But with the efforts of Prin. D. G. Vashi from 1965 Uni. decided to start Statistics Dept. with Principal subject as StatisticsAt that time the result of Maths at B. Sc. was very poor and in 1964 it was zero percent. So the management decided to close Maths Dept. and to Start Statistics Depart.from 1965. But in 1964 Shri D. B. Bhavsar was appointed as Lecturer in Mathematics in this dept. With his efforts the Maths.result was turned to 100 % in 1965. This reflected the decision of management. During 1964-1966 The common Dept. of Stat. & Maths was a big Dept. of 11 staff. Four were maths teachers and seven were Stat. Teachers including Professor, Lecturers, Tutors and Part time Tutors. In 1966 Prin. D. G. Vashi opened Navyug Arts & Science college at Surat and as Managing Trustee as well as Principal he joined there. Mr. D. B. Bhavsar also joined The Gov. Arts & Sciencecollege, newly opened college at Daman. In place of Prin. Vashi Prof. N. R. Trivedi (Renglar in Mathematics) was appointed as the Prin. Of the college. On the efforts of Prin. Trivedi again Dept.of Mathematics established in 1967. But they were in search of Mats Professor to run the Dept. smoothly. As the experience of Management members they suggested to bring back Mr. Bhavsar as the Head and Professor of Mathematics. And from November 1967 Mr. BhavsarJoined again Maths Dept. At that time he was the Head of the Dept. having another four members as M. N. Patel (Lecturer) S. C. Patel (Lecturer) & C. P. Intwala (Tutor). In 1968 M. N. Patel left the college as he was appointed in the Bhavnagar Uni. as lecturer. So in his place Shri A. B. Patel was appointed as the lecturer of Maths. and Mr. T. R. Naik was appointed as part time Tutor. After the retirement of A. B. Patel, T.R. Naik went to navyug College and a Part time lecturer post was created and Mr. A. A. Shaikh was appointed as Part Time lecturer of Mathematics. After the retirement of C. P. Intwala one post of Lecturer was created and Mr. V. S. Mehta was appointed as the lecturer of Mathematics. Prof. Bhavsar has also worked as Vice Principal from 1989 to 1996 and as the Principal from 1997 to his retirement in 2003. Now the Department of Mathematics is smoothly runned by V. S Mehta and Divya Patel.
